HRV Breathing

A resonant breathing app for Garmin watches

Available via the Garmin Connect IQ Store.

HRV Breathing is a resonant breathing app for Garmin watches.

It is designed to improve heart rate variability (HRV) through slow, regular breathing (5–6 breaths per minute). Resonant breathing, also called coherent breathing, has been shown to influence autonomic nervous system activity and to reduce stress and anxiety, while increasing relaxation.

The app is optimised for night-time breathing, with no blue light and minimal disruption of the circadian rhythm.

Features

The app was designed to solve a few key limitations we see in many existing resonant breathing apps:

  • No phone required
The app runs directly on the Garmin watch, without the need for a phone. This makes it particularly suitable for people who want to avoid bringing their phone into the bedroom. It allows users to do breathing exercises right before sleep, or during the night if they wake up and need support falling asleep again.
  • Optimised for night-time use
The interface is fully red-shift optimised, with the aim of minimising light exposure in low-light conditions. Sessions are saved automatically, so if you fall asleep during a breathing session, the activity is still recorded.
  • Focused interface
We intentionally designed the app to focus on a single breathing modality only: resonant breathing. There are no additional modes or distractions.
  • Symmetric and asymmetric breathing modes
The app supports both symmetric breathing and longer-exhale breathing, enabled via a “Longer Exhale” toggle. We generally recommend a longer exhale for individuals who experience increased stress responses or sympathetic activation.
